Jan. 29, 2001: Telemarketing Bill
Denver viewer Nancy Smith thought that she was getting a three-night stay at a fancy hotel. What she got was a pitch for something called the Tri-Star Vacuum Cleaner -- with a price tag of $1,600. And no guarantee she'll ever be able to use the hotel package.
Telemarketers generate more of my hate mail than anyone else in the known universe.
So here's the good news. Once again, the state legislature will be looking at a way to cut back on those annoying calls at no cost to you. The proposal would let you get on a list that telemarketers would have to buy -- a list of people like you who don't want those calls.
You could file complaints on the Internet and the system would be set up to identify repeat offenders and refer them to the right agencies for prosecution.
The bad news is that in the last legislative session, a similar bill lost by two votes in the House.
If you've got strong feelings on this one and if you want to strike a blow for freedom from annoying phone calls maybe you should call your state senator or state representative.
